White males talking diversity

When the Hollywood Reporter recently organized a round table on "Avoiding Ethnic Stereotypes and How to "Break the Mold" of Princesses", it caused a bit of controversy as all the panelists were white males.

Elle magazine nicely countered this by adding the voices of female animators: "We Asked 4 Female Animators About Diversity and Women in the Industry?"

The Pixar Story

For those of you, like me, who loves animation I present you a trailer of the TRUE story of Pixar and how it became a successful company. The film is called "The Pixar Story," which tells the story of how John Lasseter began his career in animation. Unfortunately, I could not find a full video of the film, however, if you are interested in a career in animation watch the film and learn, not only Pixar but how 3D animation was born.

Which Docter?

Here is your Monday morning wake up call. Fair warning: the lyrics contain expletives. Not any I have not heard in class but still, in the old days the would get a "Parental Advisory" sticker.

It won a award or nine. Floris Kaayk, the animator, you may remember, also created The Origin of Creatures.

RenderMan

RenderMan 21 Non Commercial is finally out, so I tested it with Maya 2017. The image below took almost 8 minutes to render - that is not promising. RenderMan comes with many great material presents, setting up this scene for rendering was a breeze. Saved as openEXR and adjusted in Photoshop.

I rendered the same scene with the now default Arnold Renderer. It does not come with many materials and those have no presets. I used Batch render, which does work but places a watermark in the image. That is barely visible in this image, which was also rendered to openEXR and adjusted in Photoshop. Was a bit more involved to set up and took at least as long render

Adobe MAX 2016-We may not have gotten a cool gift but...

So as a lot of you know, and if you didn't know ,well now you do, a group of Monmouth students, from the Monmouth Review club, went to Adobe MAX this year. While we were there Cut&Paste a company that provides professionals the opportunity to make new connections, gain exposure, and learn from one another, hosted a Virtual Reality drawing competition. Above is my entry and below is what I won.

VFX 2 VR

Our local SIGGRAPH chapter organized an event called "From Visual Effects to Virtual Reality" - "This evening will feature presentations from a number of NYC-area production houses that have long been known for their visual effects and CG work but are now producing VR content as well." - Well worth checking out if you are into VR. Which should be if you are into animation!

Meet Franklin

This announcement on Animation World Network alerted me to a new freely available rig. I have not yet tried it out, but it looks promising: Artella | Free Character.

It does require a special plugin which makes me worry about protability: that plug-in may or may not work for Maya 2017. Which is not out yet, but will be soon I assume.

Volunteer Opportunity

The following request came in and this can be an opportunity to gain some exposure. It is not an internship, you would be working directly with the not-for-profit client. Lunchbreak's Kate McMahon writes:

"We are in the final stages of an online virtual food drive in partnership with TechBridge formerly AidMatrix to raise funds for Lunch Break.
Please see below. We are hoping to customize the site changing the shopper (there are 2) one being a cartoon animation of our Executive Director, and the other being our Head Chef Tyrone. It is my understanding that we need to have their characters animated, in cartoon style, frame by frame. Here is the link
Game Drive: http://vad.aidmatrix.org/vadxml.cfm?driveid=5174
We are hoping a student or professional animator may consider donating their expertise for this project. If a student, over the summer, they would receive volunteer hours. We are hoping to launch the site in September."

You can contact me if you are interested.

Bill Plymton Master Class

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to attend a masterclass by animator Bill Plympton (I posted the event last week)

Did not bring a camera, just my phone

It was an inspiring event, with some great drawing: he showed how many of his characters are made from really basic shapes, and drew a tiny sketch on a postcard for each attendee (I choose Guard Dog) And how does he survive as an independent animator? He is not beholden to any corporation he said, and then showed the following commercial, as he does do commercials:

His Dogma explains how you can make money creating independent animation: keep it short, cheap and funny!

Manufacturing Animation

At last year's SIGGRAPH I had the pleasure of meeting Shuzo John Shiota, president of Polygon Pictures. This week I found this interesting talk he gave, that reveals some of the inner workings of an animation studio. He is Japanese, but his English should be easy to follow for you - he studied in the US, hence the "John" part of his name.

Van Gogh Paintings Come To Life

I thought that this was very interesting and just what you can do with animation and enough effort. I don't know if you can lay this without being logged into Facebook, but hopefully you don't have to be.
It also does take a few seconds to load the actual video into the post on my end so if you don't see it at first wait a few please.

Really Nice Character Animation Reel

Sandra Bertone
So this is Ronald Toes 2014 Character Animation Demo reel. Its a good length at 1:56 and it has some nice music that he keeps the animations in time with. The few things I found that he could have fixed were the creators of the rigs, assuming that he did not create them, and the creator of the music, also assuming if he didn't create the track. For his order I think that the scene with the blonde woman was stronger than the Buddy the Elf scene and after Buddy the Elf should have been the little fox tail rig. Overall I think it is a good reel that can be improved upon.

Reel that is way better than mine...

Here is a reel from Hiroki Itokazu, I think its a good reel because not only is he putting his best work forward but he has breakdowns and shows clips of the movies that he has worked only relegated to the models or character he was working with. This guy works for Disney for a reason...

Decent Animation Reel

This reel had some nice animations but he never listed what he did in the animations or if everything was his, he didn't put his best work first, and there was no music but it was a good length.

A Good Reel Or Two

So I am going to warn anyone about to view the first video right now that there is cursing in it and a phallic object shown twice. However, besides that, I think it is a good reel because it shows what he is able to and he explains what he did do in the few breakdowns at the end.

However, if that is too inappropriate to show in class then the second one also shows off the animator's skill sets quite well, and besides not knowing if he made and rigged the last 3D model, I feel as if it showcases what his work looks like quite well.

Parenting Bug?

Oh joy: demonstrating how to parent a squash deformer to a ball, the darn thing refused to move with the already animated ball. A bug? Maybe. Annoying? Yeah!

What seems to fix it is putting the whole shebang (sphere and handle) in a group, animate the group and take the objects out of the group again. Why that works? Beats me, but it did a couple of times.

More 3D Printed Animation

This video was created by Raymond McCarthy Bergeron, a MFA student at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Seem like an attempt to use zoetrope techniques to tell a story.
