Reel 2014 Conrad Ostwald from Conrad Ostwald on Vimeo.
The music worked really well and everything was timed to it. However, everything went extremely fast. The work was impressive, but most of it was hard to see clearly. He only showed a breakdown of one shot, which was strange, and it was so quick you can hardly process what it happening. Additionally, what he did was not clearly labeled. It technically is, but it's done in a way that, while graphically interesting, is hard to understand at first watch. It's only a minute long, but if everything was stretched out more, it would have worked much better.

360 Oscar Nominee
AFAIK this is a first: a 360 animation has been nominated for an academy award. Check this out and look around:
Created as one of the Google Spotlight Stories, directed by Patrick Osborne. And remember the Non Photorealistically rendered animations I showed in class? Like "The New Chair" and "Brick-a-Brac"? Cassidy Curtis is credited as the Technical Art Lead for this animation.
(Post? Meta?) Modern PSA's
The National Film Board of Canada produced a series of "commercials" for the common good, or as Cartoon Brew describes it: "A Dark Series of Micro-Shorts by Top Animators". Here is the one by Chris Landreth
You can find the entire series on Vimeo: "Naked Island, Public Service Alerts for a new Era"

I believe, that on the whole, this demo reel is relatively strong. The music may be a little bit on the boring side, but I think it is made up for by synchronizing the cuts between pieces to the beat. I do not feel as though this person put their best work first, either. While the first piece was nice, I don't think it was wise to start with a monochromatic piece because it is not very visually stimulating. I feel that there were several other pieces that were stronger and would have made a better introduction. I like that his person has a very wide variety of work displaying their ability to work with different mediums and create multiple styles. I also like how they took time at the end of the reel to quickly go through a good deal of the pieces and show who they were made for. While that was a nice touch, it would also have been nice if they has included a list in the description of the different projects and what exactly they had done for each.

Great Demo Reel (Melissa Thomas)
Joe Han Animation Demo Reel 2016 from Joe Han on Vimeo.
This demo reel is pretty great, not perfect, but hits the main points. Obviously he has a lot big name work in his demo reel but what I found makes it great is pacing; each piece was given a respectable amount of time but they weren't so long that it became boring. He did well with picking high action shots which made for more exciting movement and timing with the music. He also listed all the projects in order and what he did for them both during the video and in the comments. My only problem is that it is his 2016 Demo Reel and he has a lot of old work in it but still it is a great example of what we should strive for just with current work.
